Inclusive Schools Week 2019: December 3rd-7th
Walk In My Shoes
Students in the Robinson Partnership class adapted the Floris ES Walk In My Shoes Program into a disability research project and disability simulation event for 9th graders. How they did it: -Met in the library and researched disabilities -Identified causes, challenges, and things that can help people with each disability. -Attended a presentation by the Walk In My Shoes program developer. -Participated in the Floris ES event. -Developed adapted activity objectives, descriptions, and scripts. -Collaborated to improve each other's activities. -Held a disability simulation trial day where they practiced with each other in class. The Research Project: Creating the WIMS simulation scripts from a research project allowed students an opportunity to learn about disabilities in a real-world and applicable way. They felt so much ownership with using their scripts and learned a lot about disabilities along the way Inclusion: The unique element of this project was the inclusion of students with special needs. They participated by observing the event, handing out materials, and sharing their favorite items in the sensory room! |
